The Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy are expected to attract a marked increase in traffic on internet gambling sites, according to both owners of the sites and Olympic officials. ``We're expecting huge numbers of people to bet on the Olympics this year,'' said a spokesman from one of the biggest internet gambling sites. ``From the javelin throw to the ice skating, the numbers are going to be absolutely tremendous.'' More than two billion people are expected to tune into tomorrow’s 20th Winter Olympics opening ceremony, which will be broadcast on network television around the world. The sporting events will start the day after the opening ceremony, and continue through February 26th. Of those viewers, many are expected to place bets via a traditional bookie or one of the myriad of internet gambling sites. UK internet gambling sites alone expect to take in more than 10 million pounds in wagers, which is around ten times more than they collected in the last Olympics just four years ago. International Olympics Committee president Jacques Rogge said that he was worried that gambling on the games could lead to match- fixing. "There is a lot of betting where there is an influence on sports results. There have been issues on betting on football, there have been issues of betting in tennis, there might be issues in other sports," said Rogge.
